Importance of Laylatul Qadr
Allah SWT says in the glorious Qur'an:
Translation: Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.[ Surah Qadr]
Explanation: Allaah SWT said “We have sent it down, its not written by Muhammad pbuh, but we are the ones who sent it down". It was sent in Laylatul Qadr. In which the decisions of Fate are made, or in other words it is not an ordinary night like other nights. It’s an special night for us.
It is a night of making and spoiling of fortunes. The revelation of this book in it, is not just the revelation of a book, but this is the book that will change the destiny of the world.
However, the night on which it was decided to descend was such a blessed night that never in the human history has the work been done for the good of mankind that night. This is also stated in another way that on this night the angels and Jabriel take down every command with the permission of Allah SWT. It is a night of complete peace from evening to morning, because all the decisions of Allah Almighty are ultimately for good, there is no evil in them. Even if a decision is made to destroy a nation, it is for good and not for evil.
The value of Laylatul Qadr is that the revelation of Holy Qur’an started in it. Also, the Glorious Quran says that the Angels descend in this night, and that all the decisions are made in that night.
When the last ten days of Ramadan began, the Messenger of Allah used to stay up at night, tighten his waist- wrap, and wake up his family (to pray). [Sunan Ibn Majah 1768]
When is the Laylatul Qadr
Many muslim Believe that 27th night of Ramadan is the night of decree and they celeberate it as well. But Quran Doesn’t mention anywhere the exact day or time for laylatul Qadr even not in any hadith. Nobody knows the exact date or time, According to the statement of our beloved Prophet pbuh it is in the last third of the month of Ramadan and they are the odd numbers of nights, and it is referred that Laylatul Qadr could be on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th night of Ramadan.
The Messenger of Allah pbuh Said:
Whoever among you is seeking Lailatul Qadr, let him seek it in the odd-numbered nights of the last ten days of Ramadan. [Musnad Ahmad : 298]
It’s a beauty and mercy of Allah that the time or date is not fixed for laylatul Qadr because it gives the golden opportunity to the believers to engage more in worship and for extra prayer through the last 10 days of Ramadan in the hope to catch the right date and moment. When the believers will do extra worship it will get them more closer to Allah. and if they know the exact time or date they wont get the chance for extra worship they will pray for the specific time and date and everyone knows that one night of laylatul qadr is more than 83 years of prayers.
Best Supplication for Laylatul Qadr
It was narrated from Aishah R.A that she said:
O Messenger of Allah, what do you think I should say in my supplication, if I come upon Laylatul-Qadr? He said, Say:
Allahumma Innaka Afuwwun Tuhibbul Afwa Fa'fu Anni.
The Messenger of Allah pbuh used to say:
اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Translation: O Allah Our Lord! Give us in this world that, which is good and in the Hereafter that, which is good and save us from the torment of the Fire. [ Sahih al-Bukhari : 4522]
The Messenger of Allah pbuh used to say:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى
Allahumma inni as 'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina
Translation: O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity and affluence. [Ibn Majah : 3832]
Supplications are very important aspects of our worship. So build a habbit of making sincere Dua from heart. Conmect with Allah SWT and beautify your Dua this dua will improve other acts of worship If the Dua is good our prayer would be good as well.
The Messenger of Allah pbuh said: Supplication is the worship. Then he recited: "And your Lord said: Call upon Me, I will answer you. Verily, those who scorn my worship, they will surely enter Hell in humiliation. [Tirmizi : 3247]
This is the Special Dua taught by beloved prophet pbuh to Aisha RA for us to recite in Laylatul Qadr a lot of time and Allah will give you the best reward of it Inshaa Allah.
What to do in Laylatul Qadr
1. Performing I'tikaf
In islamic shariah I'tikaf means to engage and retreat in the mosque and to stay in the mosque seeking closeness to Allah SWT and its a great reward who do it.
In I'tikaf lots of muslim spends the last 10 days of ramadan in seclusion in the mosque its a highly recommended sunnah of prophet Mohammad PBUH.
Narrated Aisha R.A: (the wife of the Prophet) The Prophet used to practice I'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan till he died and then his wives used to practice I'tikaf after him. [Sahih al-Bukhari : 2026]
Allah SWT sais in the Glorious Quran:
"And do not have sexual intimacy with your wives while you are staying in the mosque for I'tikaf".
Is I'tikaf Obligatory?
I'tikaf is not fard or obligatory it's a highly recommended sunnah but it becomes compulsory in certain cases when someone vowe that he or she will do I'tikaf when thier wish is fulfilled.
The Prophet said, Whoever vows that he will be obedient to Allah, should remain obedient to Him; and whoever made a vow that he will disobey Allah, should not disobey Him. [Sahih al-Bukhari : 6696]
Umar said O Messenger of Allah I vowed to perform I'tikaf for one night in Al-Masjid-al-Haram, during the Pre-Islamic Period of ignorance (before embracing Islam). The Prophet said, Fulfill your vow. Ibn Umar said to the lady, Pray on her behalf. Ibn Abbas said the same. [ Sahih al-Bukhari : 6697]
2. Supplications
3. Reciting the Holy Qur'an
Allah sent the Glorious Quran in this night and the highest virtue is associated with this night because Allah SWT bestowed the holy Quran upon us as a gift so that the whole humankind can get benefits and guidance form this book.
The Messenger of Allah pbuh said:
Whoever recites a letter from Allah's Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of ten the like of it. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter. [Tirmizi : 2910]
Every letter you read you get 10 rewards and if you figure out there are 330,709 letters in the Quran if a person recite a complete Quran he gets more than 3307,090 rewards.
And in Ramadan it is multiply even beyond just think of the rewards you are getting by reciting the letters of the quran we should complete atleast a Quran in the month of Ramadan and Insha Allah, Allah will give us a lot of rewards. There is a great rewards only reading the Quran Alhamdulillah.
4. Giving charity in the last 10 Days
This is the golden opportunity for muslims to gain lots of rewards by giving charity to those who are in need in the last 10 days of Ramadan.
Allah says in the Glorious Quran:
وَ مَنۡ یُّوۡقَ شُحَّ نَفۡسِہٖ فَاُولٰٓئِکَ ہُمُ الۡمُفۡلِحُوۡنَ
Translation: And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful. [Qur'an_59:9]
Reward Of Laylatul Qadr
Laylatul Qadr is a gift to us from Allah SWT
The reward of Laylatul qadr is that the night of Decree is better than a thousand months and it's more than 83 years if we realize the value of it's reward is equivalent to an entire life. Allah accepts all the prayers in this night So whoever offer prayer and worship of Allah in this precious night Allah will listen to him and accept all his prayers and desires.
The Messenger of Allah pbuh said: Whoever establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadan faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards (not for showing off), all his past sins will be forgiven. [sahih al bukhari : 2:37]
